Zaina Amwar - Two Poems

After the Carnival

Now those human sounds
have evaporated
into the sapless,
winter's air.
The cough has ceased to be
and sweet laughter
is gone.

Silence has taken over,
empty and cold
like the Indus frozen
beneath ice drifting aimlessly
nowhere
and everywhere.

The cup of joy
has been overturned.
Will I ever see them again?

Fragment III

The rose faint with fragrance
has slowly begun to wilt
in the chaotic quietude
of deep, starless nights.
