J.J. Campbell - One Poem

A Downtown Revival

the crunch of guitars
fill the air as the sun
cracks through some
thinning clouds

the rain held off and
made for two glorious
days in a downtown
long since forgotten

i would find myself
under a tree

eyes closed and the
music from the stage
pumping through my
veins

i used to do this
years ago without
the music

under the same tree

but when you stop
doing drugs sometimes
you need a little help
climbing on those old
waves

a sick bass line from
deep in the pocket of
the 70's usually does
the trick

J.J. Campbell lives, writes but mostly dies a little each day on a farm in Brookville, Ohio. He's been widely published over the years, most notably at Chiron Review, Thunder Sandwich, Zygote in My Coffee, and Nerve Cowboy.
