George Anderson - One Poem

If God Sought Perfection in Poetry

Trying to reach the core,
the sap of artist being,

he stripped his work of excess
of purpose
of meaning
of ambiguity.

Next, he picked it clean
of subject matter
of form
of stylistic technique.

Annoyed with its ability
to resurface devoid of thought
he drilled it free of context
value
perspective.

Unsatisfied, he gutted it
of consonants
vowels
& finally of words altogether.

He seemed to seek refuge in blank pages
of nothingness.

After the sixth edit
all that remained on
the page were:

an exclamation mark,
4 commas,
& 2 question marks.

And he was pleased.
